Why do you choose to live, when you did not choose to be born and have no control over the life you were given?

Why do you choose to live, when you did not choose to be born and have no control over the life you were given

Why not revolt against God or the Selfish gene?

We didn't choose the state of the world we would be born into, or our place in the world.

If the values of the actually existing world are contrary to our own, why not commit suicide rather than endure living under a moral system you find immoral? Why do you choose to live, when you did not choose to be born and have no control over the life you were given?
Partly because of the Selfish Gene -- we have a drive to survive, regardless of the logic of it -- and partly because of the fear of the unknown.

We are all going to die, someday, anyway, and since it's an inevitability, I figure I may as well stick it out.

And all the while, try to change the world to the way I want it to be. Heck, even if I fail, I will have attempted to exert SOME control....

Seriously, though. Some people DO choose suicide -- controlling how and when they leave, even if they couldn't choose how and when they arrived -- and I don't necessarily see it as cowardly, or selfish. It's simply a different choice than I made, or you made.

But consider: Those people are not the ones that are here answering this question, and giving other people something to think about. :-)Why do you choose to live, when you did not choose to be born and have no control over the life you were given?
It's not about the way we came into the world or the way we leave it. It's about how we spend the time in between. The world is lush and textured and multi faceted. God has given us the senses to experience it in all it's depth and the intelligence to compensate those senses when we don't have them. In doing so we temper and form the spiritual form that will transcend the limitations of the natural world and connect with something deeper. If we achieve that enlightenment during life we are able to more deeply appreciate the facets of this existence. To quote Anne Rice, the world is a Savage Garden. Dig it!
This is an absurd question that answers itself... You are pretty much saying ';you have had no choices thus far'; so ';why do you chose to this?';

Uhhh... perhaps we have no more control over chosing to continue living than we did to live in the first place. You have pretty much taken free will out of the equation, then you ask why we freely chose life. That makes no sense. If your premises are true, that life is not our chosing, then why do you assume we have choice over anything?

Selfishness and revolting against God are by their very definitions IMMORAL. If you would rather be immoral, then feel free to kill yourself. A ';moral system that you find immoral';?? I dont know what youre referring to, but I believe it is your obligation to prove that your beliefs are moral instead of merely assuming them under the mentality that whatever is most self-serving is naturally more right.
while we don't have a choice on being born we do have some control over our lives. we control ourselves and a little bit as to what happens around us. it is all cause and effect. we can predict to a point the future and therefore able to change it. we use statistics and logic to protect ourselves and others.

you can rebel all you want but what purpose does that really solve? it is like trying to stop death, you can't.

and the beauty of the world is that if you don't agree with it then you can go off and create your own society of just yourself and live perfectly well. there is always some hope. and suicide is never the answer. that doesn't solve anything either. that is just overreacting entirely and if you are feeling like the stuff above there are ways of changing that if you want. you can stop feeling like that. the only action that you can never undo is death.
Very interesting, enlightenmentalistic question. I guess we all either consciously or subconsciously chose to live. I'm pretty much in-between. But after giving some thoughts to your suggestion, I think those who aren't happy about their lives and aren't willing to struggle through it any longer could perhaps commit suicide and reach a state of liberation.
I already answered the question on the religion page.

sigh, yet another rant against the atheist. I choose to live my life because i give it purpose. I set goals for me to accomplice. And enough with the immoral rant already. I mean i don't do drugs, smoke, drink, womanize, kill, murder, rape, steal, cheat, or anything intentionally that would hurt the common man. I mean come on, are Christians the only people with good morals? What about Gandhi, Alexander the Great, the non religious actors who give money to charity, me who does anything i can for people in need, people of other faith, ect. The list goes on. I'm curious if you could post in your best answers as to why you think everyone else in the worlds who doesn't believe in Jesus or God is bad. And besides, Jesus wouldn't want to hear you say that would he? Love they neighbor, treat others as you would want to be treated? I mean do you hear me asking you why you shouldn't commit suicide for undermining Gods creation in life? sigh, please use your head.

i choose to live because i see life as a suprise gift that was given to me...i choose to live because i see the good in life and i would love to do my part to change the things i see wrong with it... no one no matter what they do could make me succumb to morals contrary to my own..if i commited suicide that would be the only way i would have succumbed and as far as God goes He may exist...He may not... it doesn't really matter... if He does exist..i don't think He made the world as bad as it is...humans did
I agree with this statement and I can understand why you would think something like this. The problem with the world killing itself is what if there is nothing beyond life. What if the point of our existence is to live, help the world grow, be along the cycle of life, and then die into a black coffin and be trapped within our self. Are you really ready to spend eternity within yourself.
I chose to live because suicide is the coward's way out. I'm too proud to admit that I can't handle this life by committing suicide.
i am born for what i am and there shall be whom i am as long as I have a super clear conscience in terms of my living. haha haha haha.....
