How can people be 'proud' of something they didn't achieve, or have no control over?

I didn't achieve being English, nor did I have any choice in the matter.

You have an ancestry that goes back for thousands of years. That is something to be proud of because you yourself are part of it and you are going to contribute to this ancestry for the future.


One day you will be part of another man's ancestry. There is a certain pride in that involvement of the future. Do well and give the future generations a heritage to be proud of.
I can see why you might take pride in your abilities or other characteristics if you think they set you above the crowd.





Some of us are proud to be Americans, even though it was not something that we achieved by something within our control.





I see no reason to be proud of some unconventional sexual preferences.
good question, maybe because you have good things in your english history, or your family members have done something to be proud of.


or you're just happy with yourself.
You can be ';proud'; of the fact that you tried something new and even though it didn't work for some reason you still TRIED!!!!
