What causes neurotic behavior? And why do neurotic people have little or no self-control?

Is there any way to effectively curb a neurotic person's impulses via talking to him or her in an indirect fashion about his or her problem? What techniques have you found useful in dealing with this personality type? What causes neurotic behavior? And why do neurotic people have little or no self-control?
what causes any mental illness?...nature or nurture or both. Neurosis is actually an outdated term used as a catch all phrase for someone with a mental illness, it is not a specific diagnosis, so, without a specific psychiatric diagnosis, we can't discuss a treatment plan...

with regards to impulse control diagnoses, such as obssessive-compulsive disorder or attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, usually medication is prescribed as well as specific types of counseling such as behavioral therapy...

you can find more information on OCD here:

The term neurotic is no longer used, as it did not accurately describe the person's specific issues. If a person is having impulse control issues, then they could benefit from counseling to develop skills to deal with those issues.

You can't be both her friend and her therapist. That does not work.
